Focus On Baseball

It’s March 2017 and baseball season is upon us. Lots of people have high hopes for their teams, wondering if they have what it takes to win it all. Can the Cubs repeat, will there be another Cinderella story and more?

But I Don’t Care About Baseball

Many of us really don’t care about baseball and I understand that, however, there is a huge reason why baseball can help you focus on your business. If you care about your business you should think about checking out some facts about baseball.

The Mechanics of it All

When you look into the requirements of being a good baseball player you realize there are so many aspects that you need to be proficient at in order to be successful. Because it would take too long to discuss all of the aspects of what you need to do in this post, we are going to focus on just one aspect and that will be hitting the ball.

What is Your Objective?

In this case our objective is hitting the ball. I am going to confess right now that I was never really good at baseball but my brother was a natural. He could play nearly all of the positions and he was great when it came to his time to bat. His objective was to hit the ball and get on base. However there were times that his objective was to knock it out of the park and he did many times, how?

Focus

My brother knew that he had to focus on one thing and only one thing when he got up to bat – keep his eye on the ball. Since he had the mechanics down (swing level, good stance, know his pitches, etc.), all he had to do what to not take his eye off the ball, stay focused.

His Results

Because he had everything he needed plus focus, his results were predictable. He knew (and so did his teammates and coaches), that when he got his chance at the plate if he stayed focused he would get a hit and he did it over and over and everybody wanted him on their team.


Your Business

The same goes for your business. Figure out what your objective is (no it is not to just sell something). What are you trying to accomplish, what problems do your products and services resolve for those they are designed to help? How can you set yourself apart from your competition? Think, think, think!

Most businesses don’t want to take the time required to do this and do it right. But that is great news for you because you will instantly be launched ahead of your competition. Learn the fundamentals like you need to in baseball. Once you have the fundamentals down and you have a clear objective things start to fall into place.

What Ball are You Trying to Hit?

When you play baseball there is one ball thrown at you at a time so focus is easy. In business there are many “balls” being thrown at you all at the same time so it is up to you to figure out which ones you need to try and hit. Reach for too many and the wrong ones and the other side wins. Reach for too little and you never get to where you want to go.

How is Your Swing?

Do you have the fundamentals? Do you have the right equipment and teammates? Did you practice enough? Do you have the right coaching? The list goes on and on.

Your Need for a Coach

There are only so many people that are qualified to play Major League Baseball. Out of 7 Billion people in the world, only a handful will ever make it. If they are that good then why do they need a coach? Great question!

When you drive your car do you make corrections as you go? Of course you do or you would crash. Same goes for world-class athletes. We all make mistakes, we all get a little off the path and need someone to help us stay focused on the goal. World-class athletes and business owners are the same. We may be playing a different game but we are all in pursuit of the prize we have defined.

Find a great coach and you may find yourself in the winners circle!
