I know what you
may be thinking, why would I be writing a business blog post about “You and
Halloween?” Great question and there is more to it than you may think!
The story is
told about putting pumpkins that are carved into Jack-O-Lantern’s on our front
steps to scare away evil spirits. This leads to the question of how many
potential customers are you scaring away by putting your “scary” face forward
when a potential customer comes to you for the first time? Let me give you an
example:
Recently I
needed to get some work done to my automobile. When I went to speak with the
person at the front desk, they were rude, nasty and were literally driving
customers away (I was one of them). It was really a shame to find out this was
the owner of the company!
In my world we
call these types of situations a “Sales
Prevention Department.” Have you ever gone through your business and tried
to find all of the “Sales Prevention Departments” in your business? Don’t think that you don’t have them because
you do.
I have had the
pleasure of working with thousands of companies around the globe and haven’t
found a single company yet that doesn’t have them. Think about this:
- Who
is the first person a prospect or customer see’s or speaks with in your
business?
- How
do they sound on the phone?
- How
do they respond to the prospect or customers request?
- Have
these people been trained in how to deal with prospects and customers?
You need to
think through and determine what type of company you want to be. How easy or
hard do you want to make it for prospects and customers to deal with you? Remember, the harder you make it on them, the harder they will make it on you!
You don’t want
to make it harder to grow your business you want to make it easier. Go through
your entire business and be honest about how you are handling things. Remember
that your employees are a reflection of you. They are also going to act the way
they see you and how they believe that you would have them handle things.
Do everything
that you can to make it easier for people to:
- Find
you
- Begin
a dialogue with you
- Buy
from you
- Tell
others about you (in a positive way)
- Do
more business with you
People need your
products and services but they may not know it or they may be going to your
competitor. People are going to go to the place of least resistance so make sure that your business is not only
the place of least resistance but is
extremely welcoming!
Get started on
these and hopefully soon “You and Halloween” won’t have anything in common!
