Most people that have a service or product they
offer believe that is what they sell. You may say of course what else would
they be selling? In “What Do You Sell?” we are going to not only answer this
question but hopefully get you to realize that it may not be so.
“What Do You Sell?” is the question that all
salespeople, managers and business owners should be asking themselves. If you
look at your offerings you may look at the products you sell and say we sell
computers or hamburgers or services like computer and network repairs or
installations.
You may be in a different type of service business.
You may have your own hair salon or maybe you are a veterinarian and you go out
to farms and tend to their sick animals.
All of these different businesses provide products
and services. If all of them were asked the question of “What Do You Sell?”
they will most likely all come up with the answer that describes what they
offer. Is this the right answer? Maybe not.
Let’s say you have your own hair salon and you offer
what most hair salons offer. You can cut hair, color hair, shampoo, sell hair
care products, etc. But are the people that come into your establishment buying
a haircut or a shampoo Are they coming in to buy the hair care products that
you sell or is there something more?
I would suggest to you they are coming in for
something far more valuable than merely the products and services you offer.
Your customers are coming in with a vision and want to leave with their vision
realized.
They come into your salon feeling like they are a
bit of a mess and want to go out looking like a million bucks – this is your
real marketing message!
When a woman goes into a hair salon they want to
come out with the perfect haircut and the most glamorous look, they want to
turn heads when they walk down the street. They want to know they look their
absolute best.
Now let me ask the question again – “What Do You
Sell?” If you think this through you will see that you aren’t selling shampoos,
haircuts and products, you are selling self-esteem! You are selling glamour,
you are selling the feeling the individual wants to feel. You are selling peace
of mind!
If you get this into your mind it will radically
change your business for the better. It will change how you market, how you
sell, what your ads look like, your packaging, your bundles, your everything!
Spend some time and brainstorm about what it is you
really offer and you will be able to answer the question “What Do You Sell?”
