“If Only I…” are the words I hear so often when I am
working with our clients or speaking at an event.
All of us can look back and see things clearly and
see where we could have done things differently to get the outcome we were
hoping for and there is nothing wrong with doing this from time to time.
However, the issue arises when we seem to get stuck
in the world of “If Only I …” If we get stuck there we won’t move forward as our
yesterdays, our past, our mistakes condemn us to the same type of future. Hopefully that is not what you want but
in fact you are trying to break free from mistakes and become successful.
I say hopefully
because there are people that are actually trying to fail but in a way that
makes them think they are working towards success. I can share more about this
at another time and on another post.
What we do not want is to keep looking backwards.
You know the type, living in their glory days, don’t fall victim to that. If we keep talking about how great
yesterday was it may be because we haven’t done anything today!
One of the ways to break out of this trap is to look
at your past issues at school. When you went to school you weren’t as
proficient at things in first grade as you were in 9th grade,
correct? Later on when you became a senior you passed the required courses and
graduated so you could move on to conquer more challenges. The same thing goes
in business.
You may have had setbacks, we all have but you don’t
have to let it slow you down and you certainly don’t want it to keep you down.
Here are a few examples:
·
Colonel
Sanders was in his 60’s before he finally hit on what he needed to be
successful.
·
The
Wright Brothers knew no one had ever flown before!
·
Abraham
Lincoln failed over and over before he finally became President!
·
Henry
Ford faced a “lack of demand” for his products.
·
David
had no known skills to face Goliath but moved forward anyway – and won!
Yesterday is in the history books but today can be
your day to make history. Don’t waste time thinking of your failures. When you
do you just keep rehearsing the problem over and over. One of the great things
about our memory is that it is not write-once, it can be re-written!
You call all the shots in your mind, you control all
of the votes in your head and you and you alone decide what you are going to
think about, concentrate on and ultimately decide who you are going to become.
Take some time and map out a plan for where you want
to go, how you are going to get there and what will be required. This is even
stated in the Holy Scriptures, if God believes in planning I would suggest you
spend some time building your plan as well.
There you have it, no more “If Only I…” type of
thinking. It is full steam ahead to become what you were born to be. Never forget, you were created to be a
winner and a champion!
