What a question! “What Do The Blizzard of 2016,
Local Governments and You Have In Common?”
Now before you stop reading and think this is some
rant about politics or I want to whine about how much snow we got, you are
wrong so stay with me and you may pick up a thing or two about yourself and
your business.
Let’s
start with the weather. For about two weeks recently we were getting warned
about a possible snowstorm that was forming near Alaska which could pose a
problem for those of us that live along the East Coast of the U.S. Not a big
problem but a problem nonetheless, so stay tuned.
They
first called for a few inches of snow one day and a few the next but it could
change and go further south which would make it all rain for the Washington,
D.C. area but they weren’t sure.
As
time went on they were warning us for over a week that this storm had the
potential to be a big storm so again, stay tuned.
A
few days later everyone was being warned that this storm could be a record
setting storm so get prepared. This is the part I want to focus on, GET
PREPARED!
So
how did it turn out and why am I including local governments and you and your
business in this post about the weather? Great question as it is extremely
important.
A
friend of mine is a mechanic and one of his customers plows snow in the
Maryland suburbs. He left home on Friday morning to make sure all was well with
the plowing equipment. I finally heard from him the following Wednesday evening
and was informed that he still wasn’t home and wouldn’t be for several more
days! Why?
The
local governments in our area didn’t prepare properly. They didn’t have a clear
plan and because they didn’t have a clear plan they couldn’t communicate this
plan to everyone involved. A week later, the streets where tens of thousands of
people live were still not plowed and were being told it would be several more
days until they would see a plow! Are you kidding me?!
Think
about all of the people this will impact. Those that need to get to a hospital.
Those that need to get their medications. What about those that need fuel oil
to heat their homes or those that have animals they need to get to in order to
feed and water them?
The
impact of not being properly prepared is enormous! The ramifications of all of
this will be felt for years. People lost their lives in this storm and yet the
local governments were warned for two weeks!
How
should they have prepared? The local governments should have called everyone
into a meeting at the first mention of this potential storm. They should have
set up a plan that showed where everyone would be, how many pieces of snow
clearing equipment they have available, number of drivers, the budgets, etc.
Once
they had this they should have set up a meeting with all of the contractor’s
they employ to help clear snow and go over the plan with them. Who has what
equipment and what drivers do they have available?
They
could have posted all of the subdivisions, the neighborhoods, the main roads,
etc. and assign areas to each crew to be ready to go if they are needed with
the amount they would be paid to be on stand-by.
Now
everyone has the plan, clearly communicated and ready to go. If the storm
passes then the local governments are only out a small amount of money. If the
storm hits, they are prepared and ready to go. Well, the storm hit and they
were nowhere near prepared to go and as I stated a week and a half later, many
people were stranded.
What
does all of this have to do with you?
Many
of us have been warned about things we need to take care of and be prepared for
much like a weather report. In this case it was a snowstorm but what about:
·
An
issue with your finances?
·
How
about a lack of sales?
·
Do
you have a clear plan?
·
Do
your salespeople know exactly what to do and how to get it
done?
·
Does
your marketing team know exactly what is required to drive
business to your sales team?
·
Have
you clearly communicated your plan to all involved?
·
If
you have, can everyone clearly and concisely repeat it back to you?
·
Is
everyone pulling in the same direction?
·
Do
you know where to start?
·
Are
you focused on the most important items
that need to get done now?
This
list can continue but just like the local governments that I pointed out, if
they had taken the time to get set up and clearly
communicate it to everyone, the storm would have just been routine and they
would have weathered it without any major problems. Unfortunately for some of
them, there are calls to have them removed from office.
If
you own the company you may not hear of calls to be removed from office but
some of your best people may look to migrate to another office in another
company, don’t let this happen.
Map
out your plan and make it very clear. Where are you trying to go? How will you
get there? What is required? Go over and over this until it is so clear you can
put it into play without hesitation.
