Why would I write a post that starts with “Don’t
Lie”?
I decided to write this post while traveling on a
business trip. About a year ago I was speaking for an organization and met some
really great people. All of them owned their own businesses and we had a great
question and answer session afterwards.
A business owner told me about her business and that
it was very busy at a certain time of the year but fell off terribly when the
cold weather started. I gave them a few suggestions to quickly change their
situation and that was the end of the conversation. I went back to the others
and started answering their questions.
On this particular trip, I decide to go to their
location to see how things were going. The place was mobbed, nearly standing
room only. I decided to head back to where the owners were and see how they
were doing, especially since I hadn’t seen them in about a year.
They were happy to see me and we quickly caught up
with each other. They told me they were very busy but during the last season of
cold weather they had the usual downturn and it really hurt them. I asked them
if they had implemented the things I shared with them but they said they were
too busy to do them.
For those of you that are reading this, the things I
shared with them to do were so easy and so inexpensive that anyone could do
them. In fact, their staff could do them with absolutely no extra effort and
the cost was so minimal that it could be handled out of petty cash for under
$100.00!
They could also set this up in their slow season so
it doesn’t take away from what they are doing when they are busy.
Here’s the issue: They have been through this feast
and famine for many years and want it to change very much. At least that’s what
they say. The truth is they are lying to themselves and to me. Why would I make
such a cold statement?
If you really want to change you set about creating
your plan and putting it into motion. You make adjustments along the way but
you get it done. What many business owners that we encounter do is to lie to
themselves and those around them. They say they want to change but in fact they
like thinking about the changes and all it could do for them but they really
don’t want to change. In other words, they are lying to themselves – don’t do
this!
Be honest with yourself and those around you. If you
want to grow, get the help you need and grow. If you don’t want to grow then
decide that and don’t grow but don’t tell yourself and those around you the lie
that you really want to grow. They will lose hope and faith in you and the business
and will go somewhere else which will put you in a worse position.
Another reason that you don’t want to say you want
to grow but really don’t is because while you are deciding if you want to be
honest with yourself or not, your competition is growing and they will
eventually overtake you. Now you will be in a terrible position to try and
recover – this could be devastating and put you completely out of business.
Unfortunately I have seen this over and over and it is painful to watch.
So please do yourself and those who are counting on
you a favor – don’t lie! “Don’t Lie” to yourself, “Don’t Lie” to those around
you and “Don’t Lie” to your family – get going now!
