In our last post, “Sales – Your Ticket To Freedom”
was the first in our series of posts where we are going to dig into sales and
learn exactly what to do, step-by-step. Now we are going to “Lay The
Groundwork.”
Where To Start
The best place to start is to be completely honest
with yourself. If you read about sales, dabbled in it a little and maybe sold
your favorite baseball cards, that is a great start but please don’t go out and
bet the farm on your sales ability. I know that I am going to get people
sending me nasty letters but my job is to help you get to your best not sugar
coat a lie.
Ask yourself a few questions:
*Do you like to help people?
*Do you want people to succeed?
*Are you a good listener?
*Are you a people person?
*Do you tend to talk over others?
*Are you an introvert or an extrovert (if
you would rather stay by yourself most of the time and prefer to not get
involved or engaged in conversations, you may be an introvert)?
NOTE: Generally, introverts have a
harder time in sales because by nature they tend to want to be by themselves
(“not there’s anything wrong with that” to quote Jerry Seinfeld).
Just keep these things in mind and if you are not
cut out for sales don’t worry because this information will help you too. How?
If you study about sales and learn about human
nature and our behaviors, it will help you get along much easier with people.
You will also know if a “salesperson” is handing you a line!
But If I Don’t Know, Where Do I
Start?
You already did by reading this post, just don’t
give up, keep reading and tuning in and you will be a master of your game in
short order!
How Do You Become A Great
Salesperson?
Start with the right foundation. If you want to be
great in sales you must first have a desire to truly help people. People have
problems and they want their problems solved. They reach out to someone to
solve their problem and a sale is made. Pretty clear path that many view
through mud goggles.
Find out who the sales icons are in your industry
and study them. Try to meet them and learn as much as you can from them. Most
really great salespeople are happy to help others that are up and coming and
have a sincere desire to learn. The key here is a sincere desire. Be committed
to being the best and you will become the best if you are willing to take
constructive teaching and make it a part of your life.
Also, seek out salespeople that are great in their
industries that may be outside of yours. You can learn a lot from people that do
things differently. You can take what they are doing and adapt it to your
situation and set yourself apart.
Remember; almost all of the truly great salespeople
have a desire to help others. That is a driving force in their lives that helps
them be the best.
